“Guys & Dolls” has come to be regarded as one of the best musicals
ever written for the American theatre. It opens on Venice Little Theatre’s
MainStage February 17, 2004 and will run Tuesday through Saturday evenings at
8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. until March 14, 2004.
“Guys & Dolls,” subtitled “A Musical Fable of Broadway” is based
on the characters and stories of Broadway’s Boswell, Damon Runyon, whose
writings in the 1930's and 1940's brought to life the then-denizens of Times
Square in “the city that never sleeps.”
Directing is Murray Chase and David Nelson is handling musical direction.
Nelson is new to VLT but not to area audiences. His work has been seen at the
Golden Apple, Florida Studio Theatre and at The Players in Sarasota.
Choreographer is Rebecca Holahan.
Chase has gathered a large musical cast for this production. “I directed
Guys & Dolls 20 years ago. It seemed timeless then. Doing it now reaffirms
my belief that this show may be as close to the ‘perfect Broadway musical’
as it gets. It never gets old....even if WE do.” Chase said. He added, of
the musical, that it’s been called “the reason Broadway was born.”
In the roles of Adelaide and Nathan Detroit are Kimberly Kollar and Joseph
Giglia. Kollar appeared at VLT in last season’s “The Taffetas” and the
summer cabaret “My Way: A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra.” She performed
for many years in Sarasota as part of the group Panache. Giglia was last seen
on VLT’s stage in this season’s production of “Grease” in the roles of
Johnny Casino and the Teen Angel.
Playing the unlikely lovers Sister Sarah and Sky Masterson, are Robin Pazicni
and Robert Austin.
