Sarasota,
Florida Ranked #4 by AARP The Magazine
Sarasota, Florida ranked #4 in "The
15 Best Places to Reinvent Your Life" - May/June 2003 issue of the
AARP The Magazine. According to the article, Sarasota has it all
including 35 miles of beaches, a temperate climate, golf courses and tennis
courts aplenty, and good boating in the Gulf and Sarasota Bay. There
is an abundance of fine dining and the local economy is robust with a low
unemployment rate. Residents love the wide range of cultural opportunities
including an opera, a symphony, a film society, a theater scene, lots of art
galleries, and The Ringling Museum of Art.
The research team made
their choices using the following criteria: availability of jobs,
affordable housing, culture and entertainment, access to outdoor recreation,
safety, college and universities, sense of community, proximity to
well-regarded health care facilities, good public high schools, and ease of
getting around.
Sarasota - One of
the "Best Places to Retire"
CNN/Money Magazine in their May 10, 2002
issue choose Sarasota as one of only eight cities for the "Best Places
to Retire." The article says Sarasota has "Lots of sun,
activities, and culture. Florida retirement without the 'Old folks at
home' feel." The article further says "It had the best of
the Florida cliches: warm weather, proximity to water, no state income
tax and tons of outdoor activities...But the city prides itself on its
cultural offerings. There's the opera, symphony, film society,
aquarium, classic-car museum and dozens of galleries --- an extraordinary
amount of culture for such a small town. There's even a permanent
circus, as befits the memory of the late Sarasotan John Ringling of Ringling
Bros. fame. (The Ringling Museum of Art, part of Florida State
University, is on his former estate.)"
